Pilsner, India Pale Ale (IPA), Stout…if you’re overwhelmed by the sheer variety of beer, you’re not alone. Whether you’re a casual beer drinker or a beer aficionado, start from the basics with this beer appreciation crash course. We will take your beer tasting to a blissful level!
When analysing a beer, you cannot simply swill it down and say “it’s great” as each beer has such different character. Led by professional beer judge(s), you will enjoy a comprehensive 2-hour beer appreciation experience that will introduce you to the finer points of beer, from the lingo to brewing and serving and finally, tasting and evaluating. You will sample at least 6 different styles of local craft beers, taking the time to savour, describe and compare each style. Furthermore, you will have a set of instructor-provided notes with a solid description of the beers, including aroma, appearance, mouthfeel, flavour and overall comments on the beer. By the end of the course, you will be able to taste and tell the difference between Ales and Lagers and their varieties, such as a Stout, Pilsner, Pale Ale, Wheat Beer and more. After this experience, you will not be intimidated when you walk into a pub and see dozens of beer options ever again!

A: The BJCP is an internationally recognised beer education program to recognise and develop professional beer judges who can promote a standardised method and process for beer evaluation. The organisation is based in US, where they certify and rank beer judges through an examination and monitoring process, sanction competitions, and provide educational resources for current and future judges. Your instructors are some of the few in Hong Kong who have undergone the rigorous training (and tasting) involved, and they can’t wait to share their knowledge with you!
